A chapter in Lenoir Rhyne University football history and one of the most well known coaches in NCAA history came to an end on Tuesday afternoon when Fred Goldsmith announced his retirement from coaching.

Goldsmith, 67, led the Bears to their first winning season in 16 years last year with a 7 4 mark and just felt like now was the best time to step aside.

“I just didn’t feel the motivation to X and O like I used to,” Goldsmith said. “As a coach, I’ve written on every napkin, tablecloth and even church bulletins when I wasn’t supposed to be. But when you stop doing that, your desire to scheme things is gone.

“My desire was continuing to be around our football team, which I’ve enjoyed and our coaching staff. But I know it is time. In Ecclesiastes it says, ‘There’s a time for everything,’ and so it’s time for me to stop coaching.”

Current Lenoir Rhyne assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Mike Houston has assumed the role as acting head coach.

Goldsmith compiled a 17 27 record as the Bears’ coach and holds a 57 97 1 college career coaching record that spans through 15 seasons.

Goldsmith was hired on November 28, 2006, becoming the 17th head football coach in Lenoir Rhyne’s history.

“I can’t tell you how much this team means to me,” Goldsmith said. “And to go out with pleasant memories and not having to look back and say, ‘Well if this had happened or that had happened.

“You look back now and say, we stayed healthy and we got guys like Gaston Miller, who joined our team and Chandler Reardon,

who comes back from a knee injury and makes All American.

“You look back at all the great memories and everything was positive and so to me, they’ve always said you die with your boots on and well, I’d rather go out with happy memories with my golf shoes on.”

From 2001 2005, he was head coach of Franklin High, compiling a 47 15 mark, while leading the team to its most wins in school history and earning Coach of the Year honors in 2001.

Goldsmith’s early career included coaching positions at several high schools and universities.

Goldsmith has twice been voted national coach of the year at the Division I level.

He served as head football coach at Duke (1994 1998) and Rice (1989 1993).

While at Duke, he led the nation in football graduation rates four times and was named ACC Coach of the Year and Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year in 1994. He also led the team to the Hall of Fame Bowl on January 2, 1995, one of Duke’s two bowl appearances in 40 years.

In 1992, Rice had its first winning season in 29 years and Goldsmith was named Sports Illustrated National Coach of the Year.

Goldsmith plans to spend time speaking for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where he has been an active member for many years, and spend more time with his family.

“My plans will be whatever Pam tells me to do,” laughed Goldsmith. “She’s been a big part of this, the way she’s prayed for these kids and everything, she’s been a special partner.

“I also hope to spend some time watching my granddaughter run. She’s fast and I haven’t had many opportunities to watch her, so now I can spend some time doing that.”

Goldsmith attended Western Carolina University for two years on a football scholarship and transferred to the University of Florida,

where he earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 1967 and a master’s degree in education administration in 1972.

Thursday, I was driving on Richmond Road when I saw a sign that read “Pancake Supper Tonight” in front of Astronomical Pancake House. As I like pancakes and am new to the area, I thought I would give it a try. It turns out there was a women’s organization called Soroptimist that helps educate women locally and globally and they were sponsoring the supper as a fundraiser. I was the lucky one to learn of such a great cause and enjoy the best pancakes and sausage ever. Thanks for the groups’ hard work and the Pancake House for being such a great supporter in the community. Obamacare is, and hopefully soon to be was,

just another entitlement program, with nongovernment working people paying for it.That’s no mistake. Obamacare is just another form of welfare, which is paid for with our taxes. It’s no surprise that Obama’s legacy is a nightmare for the working class who pay for it.CW layoffsAfter hearing how the layoffs were done at CW by persons going to work to find their jobs had been “eliminated” and to go home. Even persons who have been there more than 20 years. Something is wrong with this picture. Morale is so low at CW. Something needs to be done about the president and board of trustees who would do something like this, while they still have their high income jobs!

(WNCN) For nearly five decades, the tale from the runway to the mannequin to your closet has been influenced by Mr. Vogue, better known as Monsieur Andr Leon Talley.

CBS North Carolina’s Beairshelle Edm sat down with him for a one on one at the Ebony Fashion Fair exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

we went to church on Sundays, my grandmother was turned out,” Talley exclaimed! “My grandmother had the best shoes she could afford, naturalizer shoes. She had the best hats, which she bought from Joe Bells downtown. She had the best gloves, the best handbags. She had very few things, but she saved her money and she would go buy the best things.”

Fashion quickly caught his eye, but the options for him to explore intricate embroidery and haute couture were limited in the segregated south.

“Black people did not, were not able to be exposed to fashion,” he explained. “Fashion was not really being made for black people.”

Limited access to various industries were a norm during this era.

“We lived on the west end by Beachwood Cemetery. I would cross the railroad tracks and go over to Duke East campus to a magazine store and buy with my weekly stipend money, Vogue,” he recalled. “It was a Sunday afternoon and they (white young men) were in a car and I was walking down the street by the East campus wall and they were throwing rocks at me, but I just kept walking with my head held high.”

The Hillside High School graduate kept that attitude and would go on to North Carolina Central University as a French major, later earning a full scholarship for his masters at Brown University.

wasn thinking I the first black man sitting here at Yves St. Laurent (show), but I knew there was something important because people told me who I worked for,” Talley said.

From the Andy Warhol factory, he moved on to Women Wear Daily,

the New York Times and most noteably, Vogue, where he worked as editor at large for more than 15 years.

Lagerfeld, Balenciaga, Nicolas Ghesquire, Marc Jacobs any designer you name, Miuccia Prada, all designers have respect because they know when I open my mouth and I going to say something, there knowledge and knowledge is power,” he said.

The former America Next Top Model judge has had the front row seat to fashion evolution, but as he sat across from Edm, the 69 year old acknowledged there still a lot of work to be done, but he believes progress is here.

Asked what the industry is like now for men and women of color, he responded, a moment of opportunity open the door. It a moment of go forward and leap, go forth. There are many opportunity.”

As for his own legacy, it’s still being written.

been so blessed to know and work with the best,” he said. “It was just my life. But today, I think about it a lot and I do think that I have contributed a lot to the world of fashion.”

A documentary on Talley’s life, “The Gospel According to Andr,

marco polo quotes Lauren Lewis’ Slam Leads Baylor Past GPS In D

Lewis, the slender blonde who has deceptive offensive power, had hit three round trippers over the weekend in Nashville, but it was her first grand slam in recent memory that helped her team win for the 14th time in 15 games as they improved to 4 0 in region play with their fifth straight win.

“I didn’t really go to the plate thinking about it, but I’m glad it happened and it was a great way to finish the game,” Lewis said later.

“It feels good to get a solid win over a team like GPS and I’m hoping this will help our confidence, but it felt good when I hit it and I was just happy to see it clear the fence,” she said of her fifth homer of the season that came on a 2 1 count.

Baylor again like Tuesday’s game scored three runs in the first inning and added one in the fourth before the seven run sixth sealed the deal.

Meanwhile, GPS scored its only run in the top of the sixth.

Sydney White led off with a double and went to third on a groundout by Abbey Anderson. Another groundout to short by pinch hitter Hannah Sanders allowed White to score.

Junior Kayla Hughes was the winning pitcher and improved to 6 0 with the five hitter, a game where she had no strikeouts and no walks.

There was only one inning the second when the Bruisers were retired in order, but Hughes got tougher to hit and smarter to figure out with runners on base as GPS stranded six in the first five innings.

Baylor only managed eight hits in Tuesday’s win over Central, but the Lady Red Raiders came out with their hitting shoes on as they collected 14 hits off freshman Shelby Walters, who also had five strikeouts and a walk.

While Lewis had the big blow to finish the game in the sixth, Huckabay and Kamrie Rich both had three hits for Baylor with Huckabay’s three singles including an RBI in the first. Rich had two doubles and a single, the first two bagger in the first driving in Huckabay with the third run of the inning.

Baylor coach Kelli Smith remembered vividly the pain and agony she and her team felt the last time these two teams met, that being in the state finals when the Bruisers won twice on the last day to claim the D II state title.

She felt much better on Wednesday.

“I feel great now that it’s over, but this is a fresh start for this team and this is the one that mattered for seeding purposes in the playoffs. We play them again on May 5 at their place and it will be another region game,
the villas at polo towers las vegas Lauren Lewis' Slam Leads Baylor Past GPS In D
but it won’t affect the post season,” Smith said as Baylor players grabbed their bags and headed toward the parking lot.

“We had a hard time putting anything together after the first inning, but everybody expects what we got from Lauren Lewis at the end. She’s had some problems with her back this spring, but she still hits it as hard as she ever has. She had three in Nashville over the weekend, so she’s hitting the ball well right now,” she praised her senior right fielder.

“I thought Kayla Hughes had a great performance on the mound as this was one of her best games all year. But the middle infielders played great behind her, so a lot of folks contributed today,” she smiled.

GPS coach Susan Crownover is fielding one of the youngest teams in recent years, so she’s hoping that they can learn from Wednesday’s experience and get better in the process.

“It was a rough day for the Bruisers,” she said after her team had fallen to 9 11 1 overall and 2 2 in region play.

“We still have a lot of room to improve, but we still have time to do that. We’re a young group, but we hung in there for a while today. We left too many runners on base and we have to hit it better, but it’s a difficult task pitching against a team like Baylor as they have several Division I prospects who can really hit it.

“Baylor clearly outplayed us today, but we won’t lay down. We had plenty of opportunities, but we just didn’t get it done,” Crownover concluded.

While Huckabay and Rich had three hits apiece for Baylor, Cheyenne Lindsey and Maya Mathis both had two hits and each scored twice at the top of the lineup.

Taylor Battle and Kaitlyn Songer both had two hits for GPS while White’s double was the only extra base hit for the Bruisers.

water polo fight Is it illegal to cut through a parking lot to avoid a red light

kids polo Is it illegal to cut through a parking lot to avoid a red light

Some of the most popular Traffic Talk installments have involved territory in which motorists have more freedom than conventional wisdom, intuition or hearsay suggest would be the case.

To wit: There is no law against texting while stopped at a red light or driving while wearing earbuds. Radar detectors are not illegal. Contrary to urban legend, it is legal to drive while barefoot, and so on.

Today’s topic, though, is a case in which the received wisdom and the law are very much in alignment lot cutting to avoid stopping at a red light. A reader named Pete recently sent the following question:

I’m wondering about laws that may apply to cutting through parking lots to avoid waiting at a traffic signal. Case in point: I recently was eastbound on 28th Street at Patterson [in Grand Rapids], wanting to turn north, and the light was changing. A driver just ahead of me zipped into the Hilton parking lot, swung north, and exited the north driveway to avoid the wait at the light. He was long gone before my light changed. I’ve seen similar actions at the same location for right turn drivers (southbound/westbound). I’m pretty sure this is not allowed, but don’t think I’ve ever seen a discussion of laws on this, and whether enforcement action is ever taken.

I, and surely a lot of other motorists, have wondered the same thing. After all, there is a Facebook page for it, which means cutting through a parking lot to avoid a red light when you want to make a right turn is Officially a Thing. Well, wonder no more.

is an easy one, said Sgt. Jill Bennett, one of our experts with the Michigan State Police Traffic Services Section. “Yes, it is illegal to cut across private property to avoid a traffic control device.”

She pointed me to that, lo and behold, addresses parking lot cutting with a directness that suggests it was enough of a problem for a law to be enacted in the first place:

(1) The driver of a vehicle or operator of a streetcar shall not disobey the instructions of a traffic control device placed in accordance with this chapter unless at the time otherwise directed by a police officer.

(2) The driver of a vehicle shall not,
water polo fight Is it illegal to cut through a parking lot to avoid a red light
for the purpose of avoiding obedience to a traffic control device placed in accordance with this chapter, drive upon or through private property, or upon or through public property which is not a street or highway.

(3) A person who violates this section is responsible for a civil infraction.

And different states have different rules for it. Just to name a few: Lot cutting is legal in California if no other laws are violated. It is illegal in New Jersey, and in Illinois, where law explicitly makes it illegal to “to leave the roadway and travel across private property to avoid an official traffic control device.”

Responding to a similar question in a newspaper column (from which we absolutely did not steal the idea for Traffic Talk), a police officer in Washington explained that it wasn’t expressly illegal in that state, but several municipalities had ordinances against it.

But even if the law is clear, it’s not always easy to enforce, the officer pointed out. An officer would have to witness the violation, and since this kind of behavior occurs, almost by definition, at busy intersections, there is a good chance of the motorist cutting through a gas station (which, also by definition, tend to be located at busy intersections). There, it could be hard to tell if a cut is happening, or if a motorist is pulling into a lot or station for a legitimate reason.

So, conceivably, if you’re a lot cutter, you could argue you just happened to pull into a gas station and just happened to change your mind and just happened to be turning right out of the lot anyway. Or you could wait two minutes for the light to change, but, hey,

(WPRI) The doors of Karma Couture in East Greenwich have been shut tight for weeks, and customers are livid that attempts to retrieve their clothes or use the store credit they accrued have been met with silence.

Call 12 for Action received more than a dozen calls from customers who all say they dropped off items at the consignment shop, but when they went to check on sales, the doors were locked tight and phone calls went unanswered.

selling my items, and every day I check that website and slowly my stuff is peeling away, said customer Erin DiStephano, who dropped off items such as designer bags, tops, and shoes.

DiStephano earned herself $800 store credit, but she said it can even be used on the website.

Call 12 for Action reached out to the attorney general office but there one problem consignment shop transactions are considered business to business, and the AG office doesn handle those. With that being said, they still taking complaints and trying to contact the owner for answers.

Last Monday we did finally receive an email from Karma Couture owner,
ralph lauren polo shirts for sale leaves customers looking for answers
Sandy Picard. She said her daughter, who managed the business, left a month ago and she now trying to decide whether to reopen the store or just sell the merchandise online.

We have been accepting store credit orders over email. Unfortunately, my daughter used to handle the more technical things with the website but I told that my web developer will have an actual link to place a store credit order up on the website by the end of day Wednesday. As far as refunds go, all orders that have been placed online or via email have been pulled and have either already been shipped or are being prepared for shipment now. Admittedly I running a few days slower than normal in getting packages out just due to the backlog. I personally responding to each one just as quickly as I can. Again, there might be a bit of a delay but I am working overtime to get caught up.

We stopped taking most items for cash consignment back in February and for the most part have only offered store credit for consignments. Again, I responding to every email as quickly as I can and I hope to have a concrete plan for the store moving forward as soon as possible. Our consignors and customers will be contacted via email with new developments.

Couture goes around, comes around. Hello, that their logo. Give us all our money back and come clean, said customer Deb Snape.

In response to our questions, the owner said customers who have store credit will be able to purchase from their website by Wednesday afternoon. For those of you who have items at Karma Couture and want them back, you can retrieve them by sending them an email.

while living in Ft. Worth Texas I had to call my boss and explain that a grackle (ugly stepsister of the Raven bird) had popped out of my bedroom closet and was flying around in my bedroom. I was in my birthday suit about to find an outfit for the day when the bird scared the living daylights out of me and flew out of my closet. I ran out of the room without my clothes (oops) b/c I was frightened so badly. Luckily my bathroom wasn’t connected so I managed to find a towel to wrap up in and a local friend who was braver than me to come get rid of the thing. Luckily, my apartment at the time had no screens so he opened my bedroom door and it flew out. Later we discovered the bird must of come in through the chimney as their were bird droppings leading from the fireplace to my bedroom. Talk about embarrassing! I didn’t think my boss would buy that story, you can’t make up a story like that! Natalie Brown
