PALMER LAKE, Colo. The founder of HER, or Helping Everyone Recover, wants to make sure those in need in our area have clean clothes and necessities. FOX21 got the chance to meet up with her, and she might just surprise you.
She’s 11years old and a sixthgrader at Palmer Lake Elementary and she’s already started her very own nonprofit organization.
“We have what we need and I feel like some other people don’t, and so to get other people to have what they need is important,”Mackenzie Garcia, founder of HER, said.
Mackenzie collects donations at her shop in Palmer Lake with the help of her mom, Racquel, and other volunteers, like her best friend Brooke.
“She said, ‘Momma, what if we start collecting jammies?’ and I said, ‘Well that’d be a good idea,
because that’d be a great thing to give away,'” said Racquel.
“I just feel like everyone needs jammies because they’re my favorite part of the day,”Mackenzie said.
Their goal is to collect 300 pairs of pajamas that will go to shelters and foster kids all over southern Colorado.
“Buy brand new pajamas, ages birth to 18, and we have drop locations all the way Aurora to Cheyenne Mountain,” said Mackenzie.
“Last year we had three jammie places you could drop off in Monument and now we’ve got, I think we’re at 10locations,” Racquel said.
FOX21 had to know what Racquel was thinking when her little girl said she wanted to start a nonprofit.
“I was really proud and in awe of her because that’s not who I was at her age,” Racquel said.”I can see her future and what she says she’ll do is exactly, I think, what she’ll do. It’s just, as a mom I couldn’t be any more proud, and to know that that probably didn’t come from me, that there has to be something bigger than me out there, is pretty awesome too.”
