One of Leduc’s downtown landmarks, the Waldorf Hotel, was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after a fire started in one of its second floor suites. on Wednesday afternoon, and residents and employees at the hotel and its ground floor businesses were quickly evacuated.
Fire services said the fire appears to have begun in a suite facing 50 Avenue. An investigation into the cause of the fire is beginning. Fire services could not speculate on the cause, but said that due to the building’s old style of construction,
it spread easily to the first floor ceiling and to some surrounding suites, causing significant damage.
Carmelo Scigliano of Calgary was staying in the suite where the fire is thought to have started, though he wasn’t there at the time.
Fire services members told Scigliano and others staying at the hotel that they likely won’t be allowed back inside on Wednesday to collect their belongings. Leduc and District Victim Services staff were on scene for more than two hours and helped hotel guests find lodging for the night.
Scigliano was anxious to retrieve some of his belongings from the room, which included clothes, a watch and his wedding ring,
though he said he was mainly happy to hear no one was hurt.
