Fred told the Daily Echo that since the news that current host Des O’Connor is leaving after a two year stint on the show, he has had no contact with producers.
Internet forums have welcomed the suggestion of Fred as the new host but he admitted that even if he had been asked he couldn’t do it due to his contract with Meridian. However he has not ruled himself out in the future once his contract with the station is up.
Fred said: “I don’t know where this has all come from because when Richard Whiteley passed away and they were looking for a replacement then there was a bit of contact but since then there has been nothing at all.
“I wouldn’t be able to do it in any case because I am contracted to Meridian for another couple of years and they wouldn’t release me for the 40 days which I think is how long it takes to film.
“It is a lovely programme and it is very flattering to be linked with it and to know that there are viewers out there who would welcome me to the show.”
Countdown was the first show to air on Channel 4 when it launched back in 1982, and since then has played the famous Countdown clock music more than 27,
Show bosses are currently under attack for the way they treated Fred’s former co star on How 2, Carol Vorderman, who announced that she was leaving the show after 26 years following a row over pay.
