Kanoa Leahey had never worked at a professional golf tournament until Thursday first round of the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
Leahey, a Maui resident who is the television lead for University of Hawaii men basketball and men and women volleyball, as well as an ESPN basketball announcer, was the voice off the first tee, introducing all 34 golfers as they started their rounds at the Plantation Course.
was quite an experience, Leahey said. wasn completely sure where this would lead to because I had never done it before. You see the elite golfers walking up to the tee and having an opportunity to meet and greet them, some of the officials around the event itself that are also officials of the PGA Tour, it was a really neat and fun life experience along with what could qualify as a sports announcing experience. said he prepared for the new gig, just as he does for all of his assignments.

necessarily with as much background research, but I definitely, as my wife can attest, spent a good part of the entire day yesterday reading up and looking up pronunciations on names and place names, Leahey said. the ones that I was a little bit confused on I would just ask the players themselves. That was one of the great privileges of being on the first tee as the starter and announcer. also gave credit to Montana Thompson, who works the first tee for 28 Tour events throughout the year.
helped out a lot and also in terms of timing and all that, Leahey said.
Leahey will only be at the first three rounds because he has UH men volleyball duty Saturday night. Hawaii News Now weatherman Guy Hagi will be the announcer here on Sunday.
Leahey took over for former Mauian Jerry King, who performed the duty for the first 19 TOC events at Kapalua. King now lives in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Hole of the day: No. 1 520 yards Par 4. The first hole tied as Thursday’s fourth hardest. Marc Leishman was the only player to birdie the hole and sits atop the leaderboard at 6 under 67. Just seven golfers hit the fairway to rank the hole last in driving accuracy. The opening hole also boasted the most pars with 27 and notched six bogeys.
look, this used to be Jerry King gig for almost 20 years and all I heard when I was asked to do it because (King) had moved away was just how great he was at doing it, Leahey said. it was really huge shoes to fill. I just wanted to make sure that I did justice to the event itself and the legacy of Jerry King. talk

He is sure everybody wants to see Tiger out here. happy to see him out and I like to have it come down to he and I. That would be something I dreamed of since I was a kid. Hawaiian style
Rickie Fowler turned heads during Thursday opening round, but this time it was not for his play.
The No. 7 ranked golfer in the world sported a blue and white Hawaiian print, button down shirt on the Plantation Course. Fowler also wore matching shoes and a hat, along with bringing a golf bag with the same colors and design.
we are in Maui, so I feel like this shirt was somewhat fitting, he said. obviously always done a great job coming out with some cool, fun stuff, working alongside me on a few things and, yeah, I think the shirt, it fits here. many golfers typically don a simple polo, Fowler opted for a more casual look and even posed for a photo with several buttons undone for fellow golfer Justin Thomas on Twitter. Fowler sits two strokes ahead of Thomas after carding a 4 under 69.
not like you can really bring out this shirt in many other places but on the island, Fowler said. I thought it was definitely fitting for the start of this week. said he has been different when it comes to clothing, but keeps his wardrobe reasonable boundaries. On Tuesday, he was named as one of the Best Mannered People by the National League of Junior Cotillions.
don want to go straight down the middle of the fairway, Fowler said. like to skirt into the rough a little bit, but at the same time obviously still be respectable. So I had Wiggles songs in my head the whole week, so that pretty much all I remember. First round leader Marc Leishman, recalling his only other Kapalua appearance,
